Behind the Beans
The Cocatrel Cooperative was founded in 1961 in Tres Pontas and has now grown to the second largest Cooperative in Brazil. There are over 6000 members who are part of the cooperative and they have 11 different buying points across the region. All the coffee are electronically tagged and recorded on delivery with a unique QR code giving full traceablity on all the coffees for the growers to know exactly where their coffee is. Over 50% of the members of the cooperative grow coffee on land that is less than 10 Ha in size.
Terezinha is from a family with 7 siblings and she always had to work on the farm to help her family. Together with some friends, they provide services on neighboring farms, such as harvesting coffee, putting fertilizers on plantations, among other things. Nowadays, she works together with her husband on their coffee plantations. Terezinha is always seeking to improve the quality of the coffee, as the crops are at a favourable altitude and have an excellent microclimate for the production of quality coffee.
The coffee was harvested manually and then taken to the drying yard. Where it remained for 17 days drying in the sun. After reaching 11% humidity, it went to the peeling machine and then taken to the COCATREL warehouse.
